I was under the impression that "Serbian" was written with Roman characters, and "Croatian" with Cyrillic, but they were actually the same language, hence "Serbo-Croatian". How close to the truth is this?

No. Croatian is written with Roman letters, and Serbian with Cyrillic. At least Croats say that Croatian is a language of its own, but the difference between language and dialect is more a question of actual politics than of culture and linguistics if the differences are thus subtle.
