I use 'apt-cache policy <package name>' to 'search' for a package.

~$apt-cache policy libreoffice-writer
libreoffice-writer:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 1:3.5.4+dfsg-4
  Version table:
     1:4.0.3-2~bpo70+1 0
        100 http://debian.osuosl.org/debian/ wheezy-backports/main amd64
Packages
     1:3.5.4+dfsg-4 0
        500 http://debian.osuosl.org/debian/ wheezy/main amd64 Packages

I don't have to use script fu, the results are minimal/manageable here.
