Indeed, this did the trick:
  $ modprobe -r forcedeth && modprobe forcedeth
(I had to wait for few days for the problem to reappear.)

Thanks also to nnex for suggesting the same solution.

I guess a more permanent solution would be to follow-up on Lazaro's suggestions: purge and reinstall net-tools.

But before doing so: should I report a bug? Against the package that provides the forcedeth kernel module?
