For the problem of the inbox for one of the accounts, created another folder and by means of a filter I was able to move the three emails in the inbox to the new folder and then delete the new folder including the emails in it. We shall see what happens when a new email is received in that inbox. Will I be able to open it, or will trying to do so cause Icedove to crash. As for compacting, it made no difference to the files in the two folders to which I was unable to do anything except read them.
