You could use synaptic to search for software, e.g. by the keyword "browser", if you want to know what browsers are available by the repositories. You also could use http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages Search on: [x] Descriptions If it's to confusing for you regarding to the split package policy of Debian, you could switch to a distro, that doesn't split software from upstream to several packages, e.g. Arch Linux. Apart from that it's not the distro that makes the names for the available software, it's upstream, IOW you need to ask the software developers why they name their software as they do. You won't sent a mail to Microsoft and ask them, why they call iTunes for Windows iTunes, because this software isn't from Microsoft, or would you?
