New versions of X don't work with old versions of the proprietary driver from ATI. The FLOSS ATI driver is too slow to work with GNOME and to slow to use another desktop environment, if you enable effects, real transparency. Those cards work perfectly with Xfce, KDE etc. assumed you don't use effects, real transparency. But the FLOSS driver is fast enough to work good with e.g. Google Earth.
