Thanks for clearing up my misreading
xterm may have a bug, but that would also mean emacs gui does too, but
may also be using an xterm.
Can anyone say if xterm shows an icon in taskbar with other desktops
than lxde?
Debian testing / Xfce / xterm. The proper xterm icon definitely shows up
in both Window Buttons and in Window Menu (which is what I normally use).
