there is often a hardware switch which disables WLAN. Is it possible that it's been turned off ? lspci should _absolutely_ show it's existence regardless of whether or not the drivers have been loaded. Either it's off, if it's a separate card it's come loose/disconnected, or if it's on-board then you probably have a hardware failure.
