Then how do you specify the default card? This laptop has a HDMI port as well as the standard internal audio and headphone jack. I've never had a chance to test this, but I'd bet that when I try to play something it goes out the HDMI audio, which I don't use 99% of the time. Since I very rarely use my microphone, I've never noticed if it worked or not, though your test proved that it didn't work.
