Could any of the KDE fixes have caused this? Debian bug#801702
I doubt it, but ...

What else was recently upgraded that, while I left the systemd/udev stuff
alone, might have
done something to the initrd? LSB packages?

Additionally, I removed an older kernel and some apps to free up space? Was
running out on
/usr thanks to the darned installation's ridiculous file partitions. Tried
moving /usr/share/doc
off as I previous did /usr/local. Tried boot with symlink and bind, the same.
Since binding
/usr/local to another partition did not cause problems before, assume doing the
same for doc
was not the problem. But tampering with stuff like this could do it.

Anyway, at least I can boot using good old init.
