For everyone's benefit reading this thread, the USB issue is experimental only. It's just one of those things I want to try, just to say I can, or did (if it comes to that). The real problem I'm having, which is a show-stopper, is that other thing with Step 14 of the DVD installation procedure, "install additional software." But that's another thread.
