You shouldn´t compare apples and Donuts here, at least compare cli configurations. But that is not the Point.
I´ve used the Descriptions here https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/WLAN/ to make my wlan work in Herbstluftwm. Have you installed iw? Have you installed some Desktop Environment, if yes which? Try start the respective Tool from Command Line? Why do you use Windows Desktop Tools without complaints and in Linux not?
