People will tell you that the basic UNIX philosophy is that tools should be small and usable as filters in a pipe chain; there's something to that. But it isn't really basic. Here is the actual UNIX philosophy: at any moment, a user might decide that they are interested in being a software developer or a sysadmin, and everything should support that. -dsr-
