Is there a way to uninstall Exim and have dpkg recognize my qmail

that rely on an mta?
See the 'equivs' package, and make sure to set Replaces: mail-transport-agent Provides: mail-transport-agent Conflicts: mail-transport-agent in the resulting package.
The qmail-src and var-qmail packages are not an option btw.
