First, you don't explicitly say so, but I am assuming that you are referring to the Linux kernel. The rest of my response is oriented toward that. It is not clear if by "generic" kernel code you mean the particular source code from which the Linux kernel in Debian is built or if you mean the upstream source which forms the base of the Linux kernel.
