To be fair, I can understand reaching for a newer version of HPLIP when a problem is met; I have done the same myself. However, it often leads to other pitfalls (not in your case). For future readers of this thread I would mention that the wiki has quite reasonable advice on printing and scanning with HP's kit. -- Brian.
