You might like to look into apt-ftparchive, which was written because dpkg-scanpackages was getting too slow for the needs of the Debian archive. However, I haven't used it myself so I'm hesitant to recommend it straight off because I don't know how hard it is to set up. (It might be quite easy, which would be nice ...)
