It can be a restriction of your motherboard. Has it ever seen more
than 3G in any operating system?

If your CPU capable of running 64-bit then you could just install an
amd64 kernel. What does

    cat /proc/cpuinfo

say?

This is unlikely to fix things unless it's a known bug.
