Just my memory playing up then, I felt sure I had used it since moving
from xubuntu to Debian. However the above explanation makes so much

You can try some memcheck tools:
# grep gucharmap /var/log/installer/syslog
# zgrep gucharmap /var/log/apt/*
Apt log files have timestamps inside. I can not say that I am really
interested in results since I am not going to dig into bug trackers and
mailing list archives to figure out if gucharmap has been suggested and
if there are limitations on target system or live image size for xfce.
