Well, I had the same problem trying to sync to my Tungsten T3.  I upgraded
to the newest packaged 2.4 kernel (which is 2.4.23-1) to be sure my device
was supported, and modprobed visor and usb-uhci, and everything started
working.

(Interestingly, that was this morning.)
