I once heard a speaker who worked as a Linux system administrator on Wall
Street state:
"You should be able to pick any computer at random, throw it out a 7th
story window, and have a replacement in operation within 2 hours".
Maybe do not give advice tailored for somebody who is in charge of
dozens computers, with plenty of spare disks at hand, to somebody who
apparently is just an individual who wants to upgrade their computer
cleanly but without too much work?
Regards,
I think the principle (expect and prepare for computer disasters)
applies at any scale (including one computer), but the tools and
techniques change. I started with two computers and tar(1), gzip(1),
and rsync(1). As my knowledge, skills, and needs grew, I added more
tools and starting writing scripts. TIMTOWTDI.
