For the archives, and for anyone else reading in real time: it is strongly recommended that you do NOT perform an upgrade while logged into a Desktop Environment. The best choice is to log out of your Desktop Environment entirely, then login on a console as root. Perform the upgrade from there, and reboot. This may mean you need to write down the commands, or copy them into a text file for reference from the console, if you can't remember them.
