I seriously doubt that wordpress will improve your visibility, or your
wallet if you pay for SEO
So long as the search engines can actually see your text, and you don't
have a robot.txt saying do not index you will be fine.
You can improve things a great deal the same way SEO (scams) work which
is to create links to your text on other sites.
SEO scams just have farms of websites pointing at each other for just
this reason.
If you are well regarded in the field get some other people to link to
your work. Dropping links in social media like reddit works, as does
links from LinkedIn.
Conversion to XML is certainly not required either, but publishing plain
text versions along with fancy format versions may assist.
