A Debian version upgrade requires removing packages and replacing them with packages with a different name, which the ordinary upgrade command will not do. Sometimes in the unstable and testing versions it is necessary to use dist-upgrade (or full-upgrade) for the same reason. It should not generally be necessary to use it in the stable version. -- Joe
