But the main VPN use for SBS was for remote clients connecting safely to the company network, and laptops were usually used for this purpose. The SBS never acted as a client and its VPN server was always on. I don't think it's common for servers to use ad-hoc VPNs as clients, they are more likely to communicate with other servers either over proprietary VPN-like protocols or router-to-router VPNs, either way permanently configured. NM is a convenient desktop application, but another potential point of failure for servers. -- Joe
