I wrote, less than an hour ago:

… I've missed this more than once, so feel silly but the problem was the
permissions on the chroot directory not having read&execute for everyone.

So, it was resolved with …
      # chmod 755 /srv/chroot/trixie
… run on the main system and not the chroot.
