I have been digging further into this enigma, and there isn't a

Is there anything in ~/.xsession-errors or in Xorg.0.log? I would not
concentrate namely on errors, low priority messages from systemd user
session may be helpful as well. Last messages before beginning of
session stop phase might be most interesting.
May it happen that some security fixes in CIFS/samba cause issues with
special files like sockets that some components may create in user
home directories?
Hi Max,
There is absolutely nothing in the Xorg.0.log
(~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log). There is nothing in any log indicating
non standard behavior, or errors. There are messages of the session
startup in the journal, and then messages from session shut down,
nothing in between. Xorg.0.log is also properly stored in
~/.local/share/xorg, which proves that the home folder is mounted rw for
the user.
I will try the systemd-homed you suggested, before digging even deeper.
It seems to be a more solid solution than using libpam-mount. PAM is a
bit fickle and tricky, and I would like to avoid it, if I could.
Thanks a lot for your interest.
Best regards,
Peter
