Hi Felix,
Many thanks for the information!
I purged '*nvidia*'
Are you 100% sure? NVidia driver installation involves .conf files in
/etc/X11/* that may need manual removal. Sometimes even that's not
enough, only a fresh installation may be required due to library
substitution. Removal instructions should accompany installations
instructions and be followed. Simply purging with apt* doesn't always
get the whole job done.
Very interesting. I will try to reinstall if repairing fails.
Note: I don't think I actually installed any nvidia package, I just followed
the Wiki that said to uninstall.

Something to try: add to linu line in Grub stanza, to see if it helps:
modprobe.blacklist=radeon
Is the correct way to do that to use the line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="modprobe.blacklist=radeon"
in /etc/default/grub, then run sudo update-grub, then reboot ?
Which output port are you using to connect to display? If DVI, you need a
dual-link DVI cable to achieve more than 1920x1200. DisplayPort is most
reliable option when the motherboard provides one and display has one. If
motherboard only has DVI and DP outputs but display only has DVI and HDMI,
try a DP-to-DVI or DP-to-HDMI converter or cable to connect DP output to
DVI or HDMI input.
I use a HDMI cable. Both the screen and the motherboard have HDMI slots.
Sébastien.
