I run it either from a script or directly from the command line.
In either case, I prefix it with "sudo".
Thanks for the additional info. Have you considered cdskin instead of
wodim as a better supported tool? I expect that it should work without
sudo. If scripts are running by a user who are not considered by system
as the currently active one then I would consider adding the user to the
cdrom group.
To have a more complete data point for wodim, I forgot to ask kernel
version (uname -a) and perhaps interface type (USB, SATA). However it is
mostly just curiosity and not really necessary.

Apologies for the thread breaking. I read the list via Usenet.
This avoids flooding my mailbox, but wrecks threading should I
try to post a reply.
I see, a mail to NNTP gate may replace 'Message-ID' and 'References'
headers. However it may keep "List-Archive" (it should be "Archived-At",
it is a smartlist bug) that has a link to the list archive. You may find
it by opening message source [Ctrl+U] or by enabling View→Headers→All.
Clicking on "Reply to: debian-user" form the web page sets "Reply-To"
for new message.
If original threading headers are preserved then you may use
[Ctrl+Shift+L] "Reply to List" and to change account by clicking on
"From" value. You may need to remove "Newsgroup".
Thunderbird tries to be smart, so if you type or paste a line starting
from ">" then it adds a space before ">" to distinguish literal ">" from
cited text. Thunderbird expects [Ctrl+Shift+O] for "Paste As Quotation"
(context menu).
