I just need a free email address, preferably with POP3 which works

You can also set up an account at unfriendly_provider.com and have it

Odd: my work email is through GMail, I use T-Bird all-but-exclusively,
and I have no trouble at all getting the two speaking terms, using
OAuth2 authentication. I don't remember anything about how I set it up,
other than that I had to switch to OAuth2 at some point.
If remembering correctly there was some rigmarole to go through to get a
"per application" passphrase to use in getmail file instead of the login
password.
