FWIW, in most cases I get away with using the initrd environment,
instead (and if I need a tool that's not in the initrd, I can often
temporarily mount and chroot into the "real" OS).

I wonder if someone has made a Debian package which "formalizes" this
practice (e.g. adds an entry for it to the boot menu, and maybe
makes sure the initrd is not too minimalist).
