It seems, you have run out of ideas. Most of the following is almost certainly leads to dead end. Perhaps you have already tried it.

- I recall there was a collection of wisdom related to Thinkpad issues on Linux. Is the community still active?
- Does it help to disable/enable the trackpoint using [Fn+something] key?
- Is there anything related to trackpoint or more generic power saving in firmware system setup (BIOS)? - I hope, a daemon that disables touchpad while you are typing is not involved. - Does powertop show anything related to the trackpoint (its state or maybe even controls)? - At least for touchpads, synaptics (obsolete) Xorg driver may be used instead of libinput. Unsure if alternatives are possible for trackpoint. - Have you tried libinput tools? Perhaps it is possible to get detailed state or to reset the device. Monitoring might provide more info than xev. - Besides dmesg I would check Xorg log, ~/.xsession-errors and journalctl output.
