"Need" might be an overstatement. A week ago I compared use of my old
GCN#2 Kaveri iGPU using the brand specific amdgpu display driver provided by
xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu to using the default generic display driver
modesetting,
using glmark2, and the difference was trivial:

default 7.0.12 amdgpu module/KMS: 2067
default 7.0.12 amdgpu module/KMS, amdgpu device driver: 2050

Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion,
based on faith, not based on science.
