I had naively thought that simply putting in an AMD card -- especially
a model that I'd already used successfully in a different machine -- was
pretty much guaranteed to work; but obviously I was wrong.
Any chance you simply have `firmware-amd-graphics` installed in one
machine but not in the other?
Every chance in the world :-) ...
Yep, the server machine that is not booting does not have that package,
whereas the desktop machine where I did the swap last week does have it.
The server does not have the
non-free non-free-firmware
repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list. I'll add those (I assume that the
firmware-amd-graphics package is in non-free-firmware)
When I get a chance to take the server machine out of service (might be a few
days) I'll add that package, power down, put the AMD card back in, and reboot.
Thank you for the suggestion.
