        Hmm. The GNU machines actually do have a custom ftp client
similar to yours, and it doesn't display this behaviour under
ange-ftp, despite being passed an innappropriate TERM variable. 
Taking a quick look through the sources, our ftp client doesn't try
and do readline stuff if its stdin is not a tty. Probably a good
thing. (this isn't to say that emacs's behaviour is innappropriate
however).
