The solaris native cp rather unlike any linux cp :-) "cp --help" should show you lots of good stuff, in particular the -a (--archive) option, which does as much of the Right Thing as tar|tar does, with the exception of a subtlety involving creating the target directory (so use -av and *watch* what it is doing.)
