That depends on how you do things. A well done installation procedure could redirect the standard error (and output) of the invoked programs to an a window in the user interface, so that messages can be read freely by the user. Anyway, I think the main problem with svgalib is, as someone else pointed out, the difficulty to create a nice and comfortable user interface using a simple graphics library as the starting point.
