Hi , the problem you had can comes from /etc/hosts strange configuration that was done by recent debian installers. The problem has nothing to do with X (which just ask debian to resolves hostname). First could you do a few tests ? Then we may be able to track it down to a network related package upgrade.
Do you have : 127.0.0.1 localhost ... your_fqdn your fqdn being litshi.luna.local from your tcpdump (but as i am not a tcpdump expert maybe rice) Can you try with commeting the litshi.luna.local part ? (reanable it afterward, this need to be defined somewhare for a lot of other tools but i don't know your network and so don't know how to setup it properly , maybe your administrator or man hosts could help) use this just as a test.
