Chuck,

Blocking port 135 may cause some issues as some programs use this port like
Microsoft's (DCOM) to communicate.  

For example we have several realtors that up load their listings to a
multilist server and blocking port 135 prevents them from doing this. We
worked around this for them by having them use a test number where we
unblocked port 135.

The effect of blocking port 135 will depend on the type of users you have.

Our stance that is working for us and received favorable comments from our
customers is to block this port for a short time to provide a reasonable
time for subscribers to update their systems.
