i found this in my log

20030328 113455 127.0.0.1 SMTP (371) 250-unknown, why do you call yourself cefib.com. Ready.

is this because my ptr record is mail.cefib.com ?

With SMTP, there are numeric responses and "plain English" responses. The numeric responses are used for all computer processing, the English responses are just for humans who happen to see the SMTP transaction.

In this case, the "250" means that everything is fine. However, the English version of the message seems to imply that they are letting you know that they performed a reverse DNS lookup, and it didn't match the HELO/EHLO data you sent. That's not a problem. No reasonable mailserver will have a non-exact-match reverse DNS lookup/HELO/EHLO count against you.
