Why would the RFCs care where the spool is? Performance wise, that would be
a great use if you had the funds.

The RFCs state something about how the E-mail that is being transferred via SMTP must be saved to the hard drive before the connection is closed. Of course, the SMTP RFCs were written over 20 years ago. :)
