Thanks to Matt, Matt, John and everyone else.

I have a universal model in mind that I think we all can use:

One or more core mailbox servers running IMAP, POP, and Webmail. These servers would run SMTP on a nonstandard port, and, if possible, would bind SMTP only to a different, unpublished, IP addresses.

One or more edge servers running SMTP on port 25, forwarding to the core servers on their nonstandard ports (and unpublished IP addresses?). Every such edge server would be aware of all addresses acceptable to the core servers, probably via LDAP, and maybe using Matt's scripts.

Notice that I did not use the term "gateway server." The gateway would be an additional layer consisting of one or more servers that might provide antivirus and/or antispam capabilities.

The edge servers would be SMTP-only and provide three functions:

2) Reject incoming mail to unacceptable addresses at the SMTP envelope level.
2) Accept incoming mail to acceptable addresses, and forward to the core (or gateway) server(s).
3) Buffer incoming mail to acceptable addresses when the gateway or core server is unavailable.

However, one problem with that is now spammers are using the flooding technique whereby they are sending to every address in the book. So, if you set up Imail to do traditional store & forward (gateway) that server will be accepting for every address. The current recommended way is to have the Imail server configured to receive for a virtual host, then forward to aliases.

We have Imail setup as an Gateway server. I contacted Imail because I
had the same question. They told me that you can use the small business
edition as a gateway. There is no limit on domains when it is acting as
an gateway.

Sandy-

Do you know what Ipswitch's position is on licensing the gateway server?
It
looks like the small business version is limited to five domains, but is

that domains with mailboxes only? Will the SB version do OK with several

hundred domains when acting only as a gateway? Or do we need to pay the
full
price for the pro version all over again to set up a gateway?
