I just wanted to let everyone know that there is no longer a good reason to be running either the @LINKED or Y!DIRECTED filters if you have previously downloaded them from my site.

When Microsoft fixed the "ZapTheDingbat" bug that phishers were using, they also apparently changed the behavior of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (maybe Outlook as well) so that URL's containing usernames and passwords no longer work. I'm not sure about how far the fix goes, but spammers are only rarely using this technique, probably as a result of oversight as opposed to a conscious choice. The net result is that the filter now has very little if any benefit to a system as the hits will much more frequently than before contain false positives from those that like to construct E-mail addresses that resemble domain names for user names. I therefore recommend removing this filter.

As far as Y!DIRECTED goes, it appears that Yahoo has either put appropriate security on their system to prevent third-party sites from using their system for redirection, or they have changed how it works. With my SKIPIFWEIGHT setting at 250% of my hold weight, I found no hits for this filter on last Tuesday, and it has been trending down for some time. If the redirection string that Yahoo uses has changed, and if I become aware of it being exploited, I will recode the filter, but for now, I recommend removing it from your systems.

One more quick note. I'm in the process of moving things around on my site so please forgive anything that is broken during the next few days.

Matt
