I was trying to make a joke but it is hard to do vie email at times.  :)   Especially to Windows diehards  :)))
I learned the abend  term from Novell  > which is where  I presumed it  was coined.  I know nothing about mainframe admin so it may have been born there.

Unlikely  --  in  the post-mainframe world as I experienced it, ABENDs
were to Novell NetWare as BSODs were to Microsoft products. Always had
to  shift  terminology when dealing with Windows people (back before I
was one of 'em).
