Adding  to the other responses: if you aren't specifying any resolvers
in  the  NICs'  TCP/IP  configs,  then applications that don't specify
their  own  resolvers  will  not be able to resolve addresses, because
they won't be pointed to a DNS server!

Whether you have available DNS resolvers (servers) running on the same
box  or on a remote box, the interfaces need to have their resolver(s)
specified.  There  are some applications, like IMail and Declude, that
can  select  a  resolver of their own instead of "lifting" it from the
interface config, which is why you may see results you don't expect.
