This is not limited to SmarterMail. For example, IMail's listserv works the
same way. I think most do actually. What you really need is a different
mailing solution that a traditional listserv.

These days, bulk mailing systems will explode the list and send out a unique
message to each person on it, as opposed to having one message that is
addressed to every user. Such systems can personalize the message to
include things like the recipient's name for a friendly greeting. More
importantly, they can include a unique unsub link specifically for that
recipient. Not only will this allow you to determine who hit the infamous
AOL delete button - "Report as Spam" - but it also allows you to quickly
address the problem by simply clicking the unsub link in the report from
AOL. User removed from mailing = no more reports from that user = problem
solved.

We wrote a web and SQL-based newsletter management system in ASP about 5
years ago that our users use and have never had a problem with AOL as a
result.

So get or build a newsletter-type bulkmail system, and don't use a
traditional listserv that comes with typical mail servers.

Darin.

The release notes say nothing about implementing enhancement requests to the
list server. You may recall we discussed the problem here regarding AOL
stripping off contact information for people who report email to AOL as
spam. Every message sent to my listserv discussion list results in TOS
violations from AOL. I cannot identify who reported the email as spam and
remove them from the listserv.

Then AOL blocks us from sending any email to anyone on AOL for about 24
hours. What a great position for a business to be in, eh?

I spoke (again) to Grady, the smartermail product manager, about this issue
about 6 months ago. To say that I am frustrated and disappointed, that no
mention is made anywhere in the version release notes of changes made to the
listserv, is an understatement.

I have been talking to them about this issue for well over 2 years.

I'm rather pissed off.
