My situation is similar to yours. I started with F-Prot, then later added ClamAV. After Declude added AVG and F-Prot changed their pricing, I dropped F-Prot.
I've been using the SOSDG port of ClamAV together with runclamd and runclamscan to take advantage of Clamd, and I've never had a problem with CPU usage. http://www.sosdg.org/clamav-win32 The latest version of SmarterMail now incorporates ClamAV (much like Declude and AVG), and they are using the SOSDG port.
