1) My policy and the way I setup my servers and clients is that the local DNS service on the Imail server is ONLY used for Imail and related software. I leave the OS to use what ever DNS server is used normally on the network.
2) On your forwarder question, yes, if the forward look up zone is for a domain that you are having problems with, yes, that is the problem.
