With the 1.62 beta is it safe to assume that the old
variable:%VIRUSNAME% is now replaced with %NOUNKNOWNVIRUSNAME%.
No, it is not.

The %VIRUSNAME% variable still works as it always has, and displays the virus name.

The new %NOUNKNOWNVIRUSNAME% variable will display the virus name, but if the virus name is not known or there is no virus, it will be blank.

In our outgoing response to the sender we were using virusname variable.
>From the definition it appears that the new variable would be a more
comprehensive variable.

Is this a true statement?
It's up to you to decide which is more appropriate. But I think it may be confusing if a user gets a notice that says "You are infected with the virus!" instead of "You are infected with the [Unknown Virus] virus!". Neither is desirable, but in the second case, it at least makes some sense.
