I'd vote to simply prompt the user for verification before removing an essential package. Actually, apt did this at the start, saying that getty would be removed, but it didn't mention libreadline2. I would have backed up bash and libreadline if libreadline was on the list of packages being removed. A whole days worth of downloading for that, shucks.
